A Lifelong Connection to the Ocean

My journey with the ocean began in my childhood.
I grew up in a household where my father built intricate small-scale ship models, and my uncles were passionate windsurfers who took me along on every possible occasion. Surrounded by people who shared a deep love for the sea, it wasn’t long before I, too, became a water-man, finding my own connection with the ocean.
At the age of 18, I joined the navy, where I honed my skills and deepened my understanding of the sea.

My love for surfing took me to some of the most iconic surf spots around the world, where I had the privilege of riding world-class waves at Hossegor, Trestles, Cloudbreak, and many other places like Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, and the Maldives. Additionally, earning my skipper’s license taught me to “read” the ocean — understanding the movement of weather patterns and how they affect the waves.

This lifelong passion and knowledge of the sea have culminated in the creation of an app designed to help surfers connect with the ocean in the best way possible.

The Why

The idea for this app was born out of a desire to create something that could help surfers maximize their time in the water by providing accurate, reliable time frame out of forecasts.
Surfing is all about timing, and I wanted to build a tool that would make it easier for surfers to catch the best waves, no matter where they are. As a surfer and tech enthusiast, I’ve always been driven by a desire to bridge my love for the ocean with my skills in technology.
During the COVID lock-downs, with extra time on my hands, and a vision of what the ultimate app would look like.

The How:

The app is designed for iPhone users and provides a 10-day forecast for over 12,000 surf spots worldwide. The app uses the best marine institutes*.
The heart of the app is its unique scoring algorithm, which cross-references actual forecasts with the ideal conditions for each surf spot, by considering factors like wind force, swell size, and wave energy, the algorithm generates a simple score that surfers can use to gauge the quality of the surf at a glance.
One of the standout features of the app is its ability to evolve.
I continuously tweak and upgrade the scoring algorithm to ensure the most accurate results possible.

I’ve also included a feature that allows surfers to contribute by updating the ideal conditions for their favorite spots. This collaborative approach not only helps improve the app but also builds a stronger community of surfers who are invested in each other’s experiences.

Where I Aim to Give Back:

This app is a labor of love, created to give surfers a powerful tool for planning their surf sessions. While the app is free to download and use, I also offer an in-app purchase option for users who want to support the ongoing development and maintenance of the app.

By becoming a member, surfers can help me amortize the costs associated with running the app, including server expenses and future updates. My goal is to keep the app accessible to as many surfers as possible while providing a way for those who can and want to support the project to do so. Whether you choose to become a member or just enjoy the free features, this app is my way of sharing my passion for the ocean and technology with the global surfing community. I’m excited to continue refining the app and adding new features, all with the aim of helping surfers make the most of every wave, wherever they are in the world.
